Why the athleisure fashion trend is such a hit and how to master it seasonally. Since Chanel sent Charlotte Casiraghi down the runway on horseback during the SS22 Paris Fashion Week, the equestrian look is making a particularly early appearance this season. However, fashion trends deriving from the sporting calendar have been growing in popularity for years: The leggings and knee-high boots combo have long been a staple in our wardrobes.

After years of sporting seasonal athletic looks - while still incapable of even catching a ball - it’s taken me until this year's equestrian resurgence to work out why athleisure is such a hit.

Sportswear is designed to be streamlined, providing a body sculpting and contoured effect for practicality, comfort, and empowerment. Surely that shouldn’t be exclusive to athletes.

What’s more, by looking the part, you’ll be giving off all the successful and confident vibes we associate with sportspeople - making you at least halfway there. Scientific research has even proven the corresponding impacts our clothing choices have on our mood and behaviour - known as enclothed cognition.

Now you’ve got the bit between your teeth - I’ve set out five easy to create sports- inspired looks to keep you feeling empowered and on-trend throughout the year.

Spring - Equestrian

Kicking things off right on-trend. This look seeps elegance and power - if she can handle a horse, she can handle anything, right? Knee-high boots are an essential here, but for the ‘jodhpurs’, any tight-fitting trousers will do. This look also strikes the perfect balance of smart casual that we often find hard to achieve.

Summer - Tennis Player

This look is fresh, pretty and a little bit flirty - just what summer’s all about. A tight-fitting top with a skirt that flares from the waist accentuates the feminine hourglass shape. Pairing this with trainers provides that sporty and youthful touch - also making the length of the skirt slightly more acceptable.

Autumn - Cyclist

I’m thinking Tour de France with a stylish twist. Thanks to Kim K, cycling shorts have become an even more acceptable part of athleisure. They’re a perfect staple for those transitional days between summer and autumn. Match them with trainers, a lightweight jacket or perhaps an oversized blazer for some extra style. Add a baseball cap (slightly off track), and you have yourself a comfy, practical, yet super stylish look.

Winter - (Après) Skier

The essential component here is MoonBoots. But look, I know you’ve been thinking about them for a while now - so here’s your cue! If you’re unsure, the trick is to pair them with fitted bottoms and a slightly cropped puffer jacket to balance them out. This way you’re creating an illusion that makes your body look full of womanly dimension while elongated and more toned.

Good All-Year-Rounder - ‘Mum On The School Run’

Leaving the most iconic sporting look till last - one, I like to call ‘Mum On The School Run’. It’s all about the illusion of looking ‘on the go’ while effortlessly glamorous. Enjoy the empowering, figure-sculpting qualities of a tight-fitting yoga set while running errands at any time of the year.

WARNING: Once you get these looks mastered, their feel-good factor becomes addictive.
